Do you feed your cat canned 9 Lives cat food?

Mine died from it this morning! Here’s what killed him:

9 Lives Tuna Select
Flakes of Tuna & Egg Bits

Numbers on bottom of can are:

Best Buy 06 07 2011
8 159 SM ITEGB 09:28

So upset, beware people!
The cat and the food was tested so we know what killed him.

The food was loaded with salmonella.

Best answers:

Well first of all, how do you know that’s what killed him? I’ve never heard of anything like that. I would talk to your vet and see what they say. The food may have been misdated and gone terrible in which case you can probably sue. Question your vet straight away. They may want to do an autopsy though and if you have already barried your cat then you’re out of luck as far as suing because you need proof that the food was the cause of death. So sorry for your loss.

….THANKS FOR THE UPDATE! You certainly have a lawsuit then and I would absolutely pursue it! Your poor baby deserves justice! Again…so sorry for your loss. I can’t even imagine what you’re going through. Hang in there and get that law suit going!

Oh, I am so sorry, you must be devastated. But, how do you know it was that that killed him?

I’ve never been a huge fan of 9-Lives, but now I’ll make sure it isn’t even an emergency food.

Thank you for the warning, but I am so sorry about your kitty.

ADDED: Thank you for the update. Please pursue legal action, and if nothing else a phone call so the food can be recalled before some other kitty has a problem. Also, if you are up to it, could you please post this in rank several times today so more people can become aware of it? While I realize that won’t help your cat, it may help save the life of another, and I reckon your cat would appreciate that. Again, thanks for the info and I am so, so sorry for your loss.

How do you know the food killed him ? Get a vets opinion first.
I feed mine Morrison’s own brand “My cat” with jelly you should have tried that, I have no concerns with it, and it’s cheap.

Sorry about your cat if that was the case.

That’s why I feed my kitties quality food.

That really is terrible, though. At least write them a nasty letter.

Reasons to believe there’s going to be a Zune HD in 2011?!? 10 points best answer!?

I am dying to but the Zune HD, it’s so awesome. But by the time I convince my parents and get it, it would be like the end of August. So maybe before that a new one would have come out or a small while after I get it a new one will come out. Or will there be no new Zune HD in 2011 so should I just buy the one that’s out???

10 points best answer.
Thanks

OHHH I’m sooo sorry about your loss! I don’t feed 9-Lives foods (never have) – they are junk foods.

We feed canned Max Cat, Iams, Wellness, Natural Balance, and Avoderm. Royal Canin for Urinary for the dry food.

I’m so sorry to hear this :( . Honestly though, it isn’t surprising to see yet another low quality pet food kill one of our pets. People really need to start looking into what they are feeding their animals.

I’m going to post my cat food response here in the hopes that people will see the dangers of the low end pet foods (plain as day in this question) and educate themselves further.

Not all pet food is made equally. A lot of it is full of corn, by-products, dyes, unhealthy preservatives, filler grains and all sorts of nasty stuff. A lot of pet food companies are perfectly pleased to the dump cheap leftovers and things that aren’t safe for human employment (from human food processing plants) into their foods. Will it kill your cat? No, it has to be nutritionally complete and safe to even be marketed. Is it healthy? Not by a long shot.

Corn is a low quality ingredient you never want to see in your pet food. Corn and low quality grains are two of the largest culprits when it comes to food allergies in our pets.

Thankfully, there are some brilliant cat foods being made these days that include organic, human grade ingredients rather than trash not fit for human employment.

Examples of low quality foods to avoid: Anything you can find in a grocery store will be low end, Purina, Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canin, Whiskas, Fancy Feast, Friskies, Meow Mix.

Examples of high quality foods to look for: Innova, Wellness, Solid Gold, Felidae, Fromm Four Star, Merrick, GO Natural, Nature’s Variety Prairie, Nature’s Logic, Artemis Fresh Mix, Timber Wolf Organics.

Although the high quality foods are more expensive, you’re getting what you’re paying for. Less filler material means more concentrated nutrients… this means you typically need to feed far less of the high quality food than you would of the low quality one. Which also means less poop!

Seriously on a budget? Two of the most affordable of the higher quality foods would be Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul and Felidae.

Before following your vet’s food sanction, keep in mind that vets get /very/ small dietetic training during their schooling. Besides that, what training they /do/ get is usually sponsored or taught by the crappy pet food companies! They also often get paid to sell some of their products at their clinics (Science Diet, Royal Canin etc.)

A fantastic option is to go with an entirely grainless diet. Diets high in grain/carbohydrates have been attributed to problems with diabetes in cats. Cats are obligate carnivores, so why should there be grain in their diet? Many of the high quality foods now place out grainless formulas. Some excellent grainless diets include: Innova EVO, Wellness CORE, Blue Wilderness, Nature’s Variety Instinct, Orijen, Horizon Legacy, Merrick Before Grain, Fromm Surf & Turf, Now!, Sold Gold Indigo Moon, Ziwipeak, and Taste of the Wild.

Some pretty decent foods can even be found in common pet stores. Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo products (such as the brilliant grain free diet Blue Wilderness). Petco carries Wellness, Solid Gold, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, Blue Buffalo, Castor & Pollux Organix, Pinnacle, and Halo.

If you can’t seem to find a food, simply type the pet food brand’s name into Google and you will likely find their website pretty easily. Most if not all of them have a store locator on their website that will help you find the place closest to you that sells their products.

Another option, if you can’t find anywhere around you that sells excellent foods, is to order your pet food online. Here’s an brilliant place to do so: http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/

Remember that foods should be switched gradually (mixing the new slowly in with the ancient over the period of about week or so), especially when switching to a higher quality one, so as not to upset tummies. For example:
    Days 1 & 2: 75% ancient food, 25% new food
    Days 3 & 4: 50% ancient food, 50% new food
    Days 5 & 6: 25% ancient food, 75% new food
Day 7: 0% ancient food, 100% new food

Another option for feeding cats is to feed raw. This is something that should be thoroughly researched before being attempted:
http://www.rawfedcats.org/ (Brilliant raw feeding in rank for cats)
http://www.rawfed.com/ (More brilliant raw feeding in rank)
    http://www.rawfed.com/myths/index.html (Myths about raw feeding)

Now the question is, do you feed wet or dry? Wet is the right answer. The reason is, in the wild, cats normally get most of their water content directly from their prey items and drink very small. Domestic cats are no different, and because of the fact that they are designed to take in water with their meal, they have a very low thirst drive. Cats often just don’t drink enough. This leads to urinary tract infections and crystals. The bit about dry food being better for teeth is a myth and has not been proven in the least (cats barely even chew their dry food and, really, does a pretzel clean /your/ teeth? Cats should have their teeth brushed with cat toothbrushes and cat toothpaste at least a few times a week as well as see the vet for dental cleanings when necessary /regardless/ of what they are being fed). Canned/wet food is better because it more closely mimics the cat’s natural diet. More on why canned food is best:

    http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/bpo_ch4.php (The Dry Food Crisis)
    http://maxshouse.com/feline_nutrition.htm (Max’s House: Feline Nutrition)

Another option to get cats to drink more would be a cat fountain. Cats tend to like to drink from running water and cat fountains see to that need, cheering cats to take in more water.

Also remember that freefeeding (leaving food down) is the quick lane to feline obesity. Make sure to have scheduled feeding times based on the feeding directions on your cat’s food.
