Q&A: I was accused of shop lifting today in Kohl’s!!!!?

I was accused of shop lifting today in Kohl’s!!!!?

I went to the Oceanside, NY Kohl’s today and I was accused of shoplifting! I went to pick out a necklace for my 14 year ancient niece. I had two necklaces in my hand as I was walking through the store. I was accused of carrying 4 items. There are 5 problems with how the situation was dealt. I’m going to start off by saying that I know it was his job to stop me if he believed I shoplifted.

1. He never identified himself.
– He said to me “Hi, I work for Kohl’s. Do you know why I stopped you?” What he should have said was, Hi my name is ___ and I work for Kohl’s in the loss prevention department.

2. The whole store got to view the fight.
-He walked me over to the mens section where their back room is located. But he never took me into the room we stood in the doorway. So all the customers in the mens department and at the registers were watching the whole thing go down.

3. He said he “knew for a fact” that i had unpaid items on me.
– What ever happened to guilty until proven innocent. I offered for him to search me but he said he was liable to search me it would have had to have been a police officer.

4. He gave me two options, but never did what I questioned him to!
– he said “you have two options.” Either I give back the items that I stole and filed a report. Or he will call the police to search me then press charges and I would be arrested for shoplifting. Never did he mention that if they dont find anything that the charges would be dropped. I questioned repeatedly that he call the police but he never did. As a matter of fact another sales associate came over and said he never found anything. That was when he let me go.

5. He said “I want you to leave, just go”.
– He never apologised for the difference of opinion. He never tried to accomodate me with some sort of coupon. I was crying hystericly in front of the customers and hes basically kicking me out. (now realizing that he was probly waiting for the alarm to go off when I left.)

My question is… how should I handle this?
I called Kohls customer service and filed a report to speak with the district manager about this. They apologised profusely. the manager is supposed to call me within the next few days. What should I expect. I’m not usually the type to complain usually I just walk away but I was mortified today and I demand to be accomodated!
* In response to one of the comments how could they have spared me a record if I didnt have anything? Worse comes to worse the cops would have arrived and searched me and found nothing. I wouldnt be as upset if I took anything. Trust me I would have taken option number 1 to give back the items and fill out a report I would have them call the police.

You have every right to feel the way you do. He had to do his job by stopping you if he was suspicious. But, he didn’t do his job well. If he thought you had something, he should have called the police. This man sounds rediculous! He definately should have apologized, and had no right what so ever to question you to leave the store. Reporting him was the right thing to do! The customer is always right. If I were you, I wouldn’t be shopping there anymore! I hope everything works out.
clarify exactly what you wrote here. If you feel they have made amends and you are excellent – fine. I personally would want the SOB fired!! If you are not satisfied call an attorney.
You probably looked suspicious walking around the store holding the necklaces, you don’t know the procedure of the loss prevention dept, he probably was cutting you a break by having you leave; spared you a record. once the dist. mgr find out the detail, he probably won’t call back, just wipe your brow and be thankful that Kohl’s try to maintain a low profile–which what you should have done
I used to work at Kohl’s, and I saw a lot of ridiculous situations where people would get followed by suspicious managers or questioned to be searched. It is ridiculous. I would make a fuss; demand an apology and question why you were chosen out of all of the other customers to be harassed. If you will not go back to the store, tell them that, and also tell them you will let others know of your dreadful experience.

At Kohl’s, loss prevention workers were absolutely not supposed to be trained like that. I had to go through some loss prevention training although I did not work in that area, and you are supposed to have PROOF before you even approach the person. Perhaps you could question why the store’s workers are not being trained properly.
