What is with all the Hollywood remakes and sequels? Terminator Salvation 2011

What is with all the Hollywood remakes and sequels?

If these people in Hollywood are supposed to be the creative and artist people in the world in the film industry and aesthetics, what is with all the remakes and sequels.

List of top grossing movies for 2008
4 out of the 10 were sequels. Although animated, Wall-e was brilliant and original. Dark Knight was brilliant, yet was a sequel of many Batmans.

Upcoming sequels, prequels, remakes of 2009

Why not more movies like Slumdog Millionaire or Gran Torino, These movies were brilliant.

Please don’t agrue money because every knows this.
Everyone is so fixated on sequels because some movies have no storyline for a sequel. there is nothing incorrect with that. More original movies is better.

Best answers:

Well slumdog and def Gran Torino have no storyline to make a sequel..ha

and dear god..they’re making a ghost rider 2? Kill me now

But I agree..Hollywood is running out of thoughts so they keep re-doing crap

Hollywood has run out of thoughts.
The truth is Hollywood lost it’s creative edge a long long time ago.

Slumdog was a British movie and though based on a book, it at least showed a bit more orginality that Hollywood movies.

The most creative and original movies now are on the independant film market, they seem to want to go out there and not stick to the norm.

The fact is sequels, remakes and franchises are pretty much guarantees of making a profit with very small risk.

You forgot to add to your list all of the cartoons that they are making sequels too like Toy Tale.

But seriously when they test market the movie to a panel they question them: Would yo be interested in seeing this tale continued? A majority of the panel say yes and a sequel script is made. Hollywood still has new thoughts they just rely on ones that guarantee to make them money

You nailed it at the end of your question: it IS the money.

Your initial premise is flawed: “If these people in Hollywood are supposed to be the creative and artist people in the world in the film industry and aesthetics, what is with all the remakes and sequels.”

I would argue that the most creative and artistic movies are NOT made in Hollywood.

“Hollywood” is about show Business. it’s purpose is to make money.

Your list of films is a list of movie franchises, be they prequels or sequels. These have proven audiences and many on your list are based in comic books with deep tale lines to choose from.

Why not argue money? That is the reason!

Making movies nowadays is a hugely expensive undertaking. Tens of millions of dollars (upwards of 100,000,000 for a huge block buster) must be invested to make them – with no guarantee of a return at all.

Studios want to “hedge their bets,” but giving a movie as much chance for success as they can. Part of this includes hiring recognized actors. No-name actors come much cheaper, but “stars” will bring people into the theatres, so this can earn them more money.

Having a successful tale is excellent. This is why so many movies are book adaptations. If lots of people bought the book, perhaps lots of people will want to see the movie as well.

The thing is track record. A producer/director/writer who has earned the studio money in the past, will often be questioned for more.

But, a movie that was well loved, and that made lots of money, means that the formula is proved. Making another movie, following the same formula (tale, actors, etc.) can hopefully bring success again.

It does not always work, but it works often enough to do it. If you were the one with the money, would you want to risk it on something unknown, or something that worked in the past?

Yeah and their remaking HE-MAN for 2010 or maybe 2011. But Im pumped for that. They will make more movies like Slumdog Millionaire, there just not huge enough titles to advertise years in advance. Slumdog was not advertised a year before it came out, so there will be more movies than what is in your list.

  4. Vince(Not Vance) says:

It’s based on money, fool. Movies and franchises are like comfort food to people who watch films- they know what they’re getting into when they see the film and they know that they’re either going to like it or not.

When an original film is a huge success, executives take notice and want to capitalize on that success again. They feel that if they liked it the first time, they’ll certainly like it the second time. More often than not, this isn’t the case (see: Pink Panther 2, Fantastic Four 2, Spider-Man 3).

Look at “Quick and Furious”- It opened to way larger numbers than even the first movie in the series. You know why? Because the audience for the movies knew exactly what they were getting into when they bought a ticket. They chose that they liked the previous films and that the new film will be fun as well (IMO, it was a fun movie).

It’s hard to take a risk on a film, especially in these hard times where people won’t go out and see movies often (it’s become an event to go to the movies, not the norm). So when something like “Adventureland” which has an original tale, unknown actors and a well loved director opens and does poorly, the executives reckon that it’s because the people didn’t want to see that movie anymore (it’s sometime the case, but often it’s because the movie is terrible or there wasn’t enough marketing or whatever). So instead of greenlighting similar movies, they end up announcing “Paul Blart 2: Electric Boogaloo” because (again) they want to capitalize on the success of a previous film.

    (Sigh) Done.
